Description
The Wizard is a caster damage class that has excellent direct damage spells to cast on enemies. The Wizard also has area of effect spells and many of its direct damage spells include damage over time bonuses, which ensure that the Wizard is constantly putting off damage. The Wizard also has several self and group buffs, threat decreasing spells, and other utility spells like Summon Shadows, which grants invisibility to the targeted Wizard or group member.
Solo-Play
The Wizard is a decent soloing class. Its poor mitigation and hit points (and lack of healing abilities) make fighting some mobs a true challenge, however, the high damage output of the Wizard offsets some of those disadvantages. The Wizard is best-suited soloing mobs with low hit points and preferably ones that are below the Wizard’s current level. It is possible to find groups of easy mobs and AoE damage their life away, resulting in mad experience with only small amounts of downtime. The Wizard can also easily kill single mobs at a time by rooting/snaring them and kiting them around, it’s also possible to do this strategy with numerous mobs, although it’s a little more challenging because of the downtime associated with casting the AoEs.
Group-Play
The Wizard is a great addition to just about any group because of the high amount of damage it does and its useful buffs and utility spells. In very low levels group-play can be somewhat boring because in a group setting mobs are often killed before the Wizard can even finish casting a spell. One fun form of group play with the Wizard is AoEing with another class that has area of effect spells. Grouping with other Wizards is also fun as mobs die before they even have a chance to hit any group members and if they don’t die they can generally be kited around and killed without inflicting any group members with damage.
Summary
The Wizard is an awesome class to play if you enjoy playing casters and dealing massive amounts of damage. It’s a great class to add to groups and while soloing is more challenging than with some other classes it is an efficient and fun way to level. So whether you like to solo or group, you’ll find that the Wizard’s wide range of damage and utility spells make it a great class to play while grinding, questing, or adventuring through EQ2.
