Description
The Warlock is the king (or queen) of decay. They harness the power of decay and disease to decimate foes. Be it many foes or just 1, It makes no difference to the powerful warlock. They may not take hits as well as most classes, but the influence of their well known power is enough to make even the strongest of enemies flee in unspeakable terror.
Solo-Play
Around level 20 is when you will learn that soloing gets pretty hard, because creatures are hitting harder, and you can't take that sort of damage. The Warlock's solo abilities are fairly odd at first; but as you play the class more you get a better feel of how things work. They are most often to weak to take on an enemy head on. They do have an absolutely insane amount of damage. Understanding the class, and utilizing all of the abilities available to you is essential to become a good solo-play Warlock.
First I want you to understand that DoTs (Damage Over Time) abilities are not weak. They may not do as much damage as your direct nukes at first, but they last for a long time, and before they end they will do quite a bit more than a direct nuke. DoTs are not as effective against multiple enemies. So I would not actually advise trying to use them on large encounters.
The direct nukes are good to use after you cast your DoTs. While your dots are ticking away throw as much direct nukes you can on your target. If the encounter consists of multiple targets use your encounter AoE; I would not suggest using a PB AoE on an encounter for the risk you might hit creatures outside of the encounter. If you are sure that the area is clear you can probably get away with using it.
The most important tip I can give you on solo play is don't be afraid to root. On the single target encounters where the creatures are substantially harder. Root them first, Then hit them with dots, and nukes. Try to keep them rooted, because they WILL kill you fast if you let them hit you.
Group-Play
Welcome to group play. In groups there are tanks (people who take the damage), dps (short for 'damage per second'; damage dealers) and healers. You are the DPS. You are the biggest DPS in the game. You probably think your hot stuff with your massive damage; But there must always be balance. While you can dish out mega damage; you are as fragile as tissue paper.
The key to group play is teamwork. That seems fairly obvious; but if you try to take the weight of the world on your shoulders and try to dish out mega damage without holding back it can really mess things up.
You must let the tank do the tanking. If you are going all out on creatures it is harder for him to tank, because the mobs will want to hit you. So take it easy and let the whole group work together for the end target.
I suggest using DoTs and an occasional nuke. That will get out plenty of damage, and will leave the creature hitting your tank.
Summary
The Warlock and Wizard are the 2 highest DPS classes in the game, there is probably no argument there. Knowing how to utilize your abilities is vital to competitive game play. If your looking for a strong caster class, you really can't go wrong with the Warlock.
